Mayor of Newham celebrates the opening of Stratford halo

Christmas has come to The Stratford Halo, Genesis Housing Association’s brand new mixed tenure community in Stratford. Yesterday the Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, paid a visit to the development to turn on the Christmas tree lights and celebrate the first 70 residents moving in to their new homes.

While guests enjoyed mince pies and festive tunes courtesy of a brass band, Sir Robin toured the site to see firsthand the work to transform the site of an old soap factory. Accompanied by Neil Hadden, Chief Executive of Genesis, Sir Robin took a trip up The Stratford Halo tower, which when completed will be one of the tallest residential towers in London at 43 stories.

After taking in the views of the Olympic Park, Sir Robin was welcomed into the home of one of the first Stratford Halo residents, trainee teacher Tayo Oyeniyi. Ms Oyeniyi, who chatted to the Mayor about Newham’s desire to create more affordable homes in the borough, said: “I’m pleased that he wants to not only help those who might need a little extra support but also to help people like myself who with affordable housing can consider working and living in Newham.

“The Genesis team have been such a help with the move here and it’s really great to have the team here and to be able to pop into the office for a chat about things. It’s lovely to be in my new home and I feel very blessed to be here and living in Stratford. Its also great knowing I can get to Westfield easily.”

After switching on the lights, Sir Robin congratulated Genesis on its work in Stratford; especially helping those residents willing to put something back in to the local community.

Neil Hadden said: “This event enabled Genesis to show that The Stratford Halo is a reflection of the best of Genesis. Not only is it a landmark development for the local borough it’s also the first development in Newham to offer new homes at an affordable rent. We have worked closely with Newham council and other partners to deliver a neighbourhood that will meet the needs and aspirations of the borough now and in the future.”
